Cafe Supervisor / 2iC (Second-in-Charge) – Full-Time

Open Daily: 8am - 4:30pm (3pm in winter)

Pengos Cafe is the go-to spot for great coffee, delicious cakes, gourmet burgers, fish & chips, fresh salads, and more! We’re located next door to Penguin Island and offer a fantastic place for breakfast or lunch before or after your visit to Penguin Island. We also cater for tours, school groups, and community groups.

We are looking for an energetic, experienced Cafe Supervisor / 2iC to join our team and help lead Pengos Cafe to continued success. This is a full-time position, with some part-time flexibility, and the successful candidate will be available to work weekends.

About the Role:

As a Cafe Supervisor / 2iC, you’ll work closely with the Manager to ensure the smooth running of daily operations. You will lead a team of dedicated staff, assist with administrative tasks, and maintain a productive and positive environment in the café. This role is perfect for someone with strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills, who can ensure that we deliver exceptional service and food to our customers.

Responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership & Development: Lead, train, and motivate the café team (including kitchen staff) to ensure they deliver exceptional customer service and perform duties efficiently.
  • Customer Experience: Strive to create a positive, memorable experience for all customers, ensuring service is fast, friendly, and of the highest standard.
  • Operational Oversight: Oversee day-to-day operations of the café, ensuring quality control, food preparation, and customer service are consistently excellent.
  • Admin & Rosters: Assist in managing staff schedules, handling shift changes, and leading team meetings.
  • Training & Coaching: Provide on-the-job training and development for staff, helping them reach their full potential.
  • Cost Control: Monitor costs related to goods and labour to ensure profitability and operational efficiency.
  • Stock Management: Order and manage stock, ensure inventory is rotated efficiently, and ensure all supplies are handled correctly.
  • Health & Safety: Uphold and monitor safety and hygiene standards, ensuring a clean and safe working environment at all times.

Requirements:

  • Experience: At least 2 years of experience in a similar supervisory or leadership role within the café or hospitality industry.
  • Coffee Knowledge: Experience in making coffee and maintaining a high standard of coffee preparation.
  • Cooking Knowledge: Experience in preparing food in a fast paced environment
  • Leadership & Communication: Strong leadership skills with the ability to confidently manage a team, communicate effectively, and resolve challenges.
  • Organizational Skills: Excellent time management, multitasking, and organizational abilities to keep the café running smoothly during busy periods.
  • Customer Service: A passion for delivering exceptional customer service and building a positive, energetic team culture.
  • Health & Safety Knowledge: Sound understanding of food safety and health regulations.
  • Business Acumen: A good understanding of managing costs and maximizing profitability without compromising quality.
  • Positive Attitude: A proactive, positive approach to change and a willingness to go the extra mile for the team and the café.
